Ridley Scott Storyboard from Blade Runner

Akira Kurosawa Storyboards for Tora! Tora! Tora!

PROJECT 6: Storyboards

1. Storyboard out one of your favorite movie or t.v. sequences. Make sure you depict each shot/edit. Make a note of how long each shot takes up in the sequence (roughly). Use the ol' pause button. 10-20 drawings.

2. Storyboard a 10-20 shot sequence based on a well-known story in the public domain - an opera, Shakespeare play, fairy tale.

3. Storyboard a 10-20 image original story sequence using your characters and sets.

Due on Monday, February 21.

Project 5: REVISE

Kirby's original X-Men cover (left) clearly sucks. Dan Scanlon (right) kicks it to the next level.

Simply put, take one of your characters and one of your environments and make them kick more a**. Here's how.

1. Show your work in small critiques and take notes.
2. Find an "artistic father or mother figure." Look at his/her work. Look at your own. Look for the biggest difference 'twixt the two. Remedy. Suggested things to look for: gesture, exaggeration, weight, value contrast, atmospheric perspective, color palette, composition, scale contrast, foreground-midground-background-relationship. Publish your final version next to one of your "father's". It's usually painful, but it's a good learning experience.
3. Don't be afraid to "cheat." Eye-dropper, cut and paste, photos, etc. I think about this as the playing/singing along to records as a way to learn your instrument. Get into it.
4. Talk to Ol' Miles, maybe he's got some helpful suggestions.
5. Here's a crazy thought - integrate your character into your environment. See how that affects your color palette, etc. Often, putting the character in action gives you a much better sense of what's working and what's not.
6. Don't be afraid to completely start over.

We'll devour the goodness on Monday, February 14.
